1. Stress Management
Of all the seasons, winter has been found to be the most stressful. Unfortunately, among many other things, stress can cause hair shedding. An ideal way of combating this problem is by managing stress. It is advisable to spend your time doing something relaxing. Other stress management tips that you may give attention to include drinking the recommended eight glasses of water every day, exercising to release pent up stress, and getting enough sleep. You may also give meditation a shot.
2. Biotin and Vitamin Supplements
Besides de-stressing, you can take certain supplements to prevent shedding. Some supplements known to be effective in dealing with this problem include those that contain biotin and vitamins. Supplements that contain a mixture of these nutrients can be very helpful in promoting hair growth and preventing hair loss.
3. Rosemary and Lavender Essential Oils
You may want to try a rosemary and lavender essential oils treatment. It is advisable to mix four drops of each essential oil, then massage the mixture into your scalp before bed. Do this for 2 to 3 weeks, depending on the severity of your condition. While lavender oil calms an itchy or dry scalp, rosemary oil stimulates hair growth. This mixture can further be mixed with either coconut or olive oil; the resulting product will effectively tame dry ends.
4. Wear Protective Hair Styles
As a victim of stressful winter shedding, the key may be in changing your hairstyles. Wearing tight braids or ponytails will only increase the amount and frequency of shed hair. Instead, try wearing more protective styles – styles that leave the edges loose. Also bear in mind that wearing extremely tight hats may also cause excess shedding.
If you must cover your hair during the day or as you go to bed, ensure that you wear something loose. Additionally, avoid washing your hair every day. By washing it daily, especially with hot water, you strip your scalp of natural oils.
5. Moisturize and Trim Dry Ends
Another effective way of combating shedding is by moisturizing and trimming dry ends. To moisturize dry ends, you can simply use any reliable moisturizer. Better still, you can use castor or coconut oil as these essential oils contain useful moisturizing properties. Giving dry ends a trim every week will also do your hair more good than harm.
