Hair Treatment During and After Pregnancy
When you find out that you are pregnant, you look to forward, with great expectations, to the birth of your baby. As you wait with great expectation for the arrival of your new born, you should also be glad to know that you will enjoy greater hair health for 9 months than you have never experienced. Yes, your hair for the entire pregnancy period will feel and look great. You hair will be lush and full. Celebrate it.
Ordinarily, hair grows in three distinct cycles: active growth, resting, and shedding. During these cycles, people shed, on average, 100 hair strands. In your case, the extra hormones in your body will prevent hair from shedding or resting. It will grow nonstop for 9 months. Unsurprisingly, it will grow longer and feel thicker.
Do you need to do stop treating your hair the way you were treating it before pregnancy? Some doctors recommend that you take a break from dyeing, highlighting, or relaxing your hair. Others say that it is okay to continue with these treatments. The third category of health experts recommend that you take a break until after the first trimester.
The reason why there is a difference in opinion is because there have been very few studies conducted on the effect that dyes and hair chemicals may have on pregnant women. There seems to be a consensus, however, that these chemicals may be absorbed through the scalp and passed along to the growing life. The wisest thing to do, therefore, is to avoid all types of treatments that contain synthetic chemicals. If you must dye your hair for certain reasons, use natural dyes.
You do not, however, have to change your hair shampoos, conditioners, mousse, hair sprays, or blow-dry. Ensure, however, that you talk to your doctor before using medicated shampoos. If you have a problem with strong scents associated with hair sprays or shampoos, the best thing to do is to discontinue them. In their place, use fragrance-free versions.
After the birth of your baby, hair fall drama will kick off. Do not become worried or shocked. Every woman experiences this phenomenon, which may last for a few weeks to six months. After the period of constant shedding, your hair will start to grow normally.
Although you cannot prevent hair from shedding, you can do something to strengthen it. Apply, on both palms, and on a regular basis, coconut oil and rub it on your scalp and hair. This will strengthen your hair and prevent it from breakages. Ensure also that you use a wide comb as opposed to a narrow one. This will determine the amount of hair strands that will be lost as you comb.
