Since this type of hair tends to be dry and even damaged, you should not try to wash it every day. It has been found that washing coarse hair after every 2-3 three days is the ideal washing frequency. It is a fact that washing this kind of hair on a daily basis strips the hair of its natural oils. To allow these natural oils to buildup, it is advisable to wash it not every day but after two or three days. Be informed that the kind of shampoos and conditioners you use determines the overall health of your hair. For the best results, go for organic shampoos and conditioners. Where possible, choose products that contain coconut milk and shea butter.
Coarse, thick hair thrives on a weekly deep conditioning treatment. You may use a deep conditioning treatment that you buy from a local beauty store or you can just use your everyday conditioner. This is how you do it: after washing, squeeze out gently all excess water. Next, apply the conditioner. Wrap your hair with a towel and let the towel remain on your hair for 30 minutes. Then, rinse your hair thoroughly with a mild shampoo.
Another conditioning option requires you to use pure coconut oil. This oil is often sought for its deep moisturizing properties. Scoop a few teaspoonfuls of solid coconut oil. The oil should melt into liquid form when it comes into contact with the palms of your hands. Once you have applied the oil to dry hair, leave the oil in for about one hour. After this time has elapsed, wash your hair in the usual way.
You may also need to trim your hair. This exercise should target dry and damaged tips. Bear in mind, though, that you may need to choose your barber or stylist wisely. Choose a barber or stylist who is experienced with this type of hair.
A long term solution to your hair may be a dietary change. Dry hair may be caused by lack of vitamins and minerals in your diet. Be sure to introduce these missing links. You may also need to avoid certain products, including shampoos that contain sodium lauryl sulfate, and strong detergents.
